2. Volunteer to help clean up a site in Hampton. If you don’t know of a site, but want to help, we’ll match you to a site. If you know of a site you think needs to be cleaned up, we’ll see if we can get others to join in and clean it up!
3. You can organize a group of friends and/or family (see #1 above about the reward for being a zone captain) to clean up the site of your choice.
4. Post a flyer at your business or organization to encourage people to volunteer.
5. Volunteer to help assemble equipment for the cleanup.
6. Donate to Clean Virginia Waterways, the Virginia state-wide coordinator of the International Coastal Cleanup, to help sustain this effort. Visit their web site at http://www.longwood.edu/cleanva/.

August 23:
Hello to everyone! Mike is still in the hospital with some breathing difficulties. The really good news is that all the cultures came back negative for infection. Unfortunately the area where his trach was located is still open. They think there might be scar tissues and it may need to be surgically closed. Most trach openings close without surgery. It is not a big surgery but unfortunately every ENT that had privileges at this hospital was on vacation last week. Hard to believe but true. Luckily one will be back tomorrow; hopefully well rested because Mike wants to "git er done" ASAP and get back home. We were thrilled that Mike has already gotten PT twice (besides what I make him do but he just calls that nagging not PT). Yes, I did let the secret out to the nurses that Mike can not only roll in bed on his own but he does not need help being moved up in bed. So needless to say we are doing to do our best to keep Mike very active even if he can't get out of bed. It is discouraging for Mike to be back in the hospital but I do not feel like it is a set back. In hind sight, I think this problem with his blood gases may have been there for a long time but just wasn't bad enough to be noticed. I am glad that it has been identified and hopefully we can really fix it this time and he can come home with the BIPAP machine that will help him sleep and maintain the right blood gases at night. I think his endurance will improve significantly if we can get this problem under control.
We will keep you updated. Take Care, Annie

· Virginia Master Naturalist Training for Peninsula Chapter Starts August 25th
The Virginia Master Naturalist Peninsula Chapter begins training its third class of Master Naturalists on August 25th. The deadline for registering for the training is August 15th. The application form is attached, or go to www.vmnpeninsula.org to download one. The $135 class fee is due the first day of class.
Master Naturalists explore nature as citizen scientists, educate others, and participate in conservation activities. The training gives volunteers the background they need to participate in these activities and helps satisfy their curiosity about our local natural environment.
The Hampton Clean City Commission partners with the Peninsula Master Naturalists in a number of projects. If you’ve thought you would like to share your love of nature with youth through Clean City programs, but hesitated because you didn’t feel like you knew enough about it, this would be a perfect opportunity for you. As a Master Naturalist, you would have the background you need to support School Pride programs.

8/18/10:
Hello to everyone!
Mike is going to be OK but he was having difficulty with maintaining the correct level of blood gases at home so we had to go back to the hospital. The opening from the trach is very slow to heal so it limited our options at home to take care of this problem. Mike is having the same problems that people with sleep apnea have. So when he gets home he gets to sleep with a machine and that controls his breathing so carbon dioxide does not build up in his blood. BUT he can't use the machine until he heals so that what the doctors in the hospital are trying to control. He is already doing much better so we are hoping that this will be a very quick visit. The transition home and now this hospitalization have been harder than we anticipated. We are hoping that once he gets this problem under control that things will go smoother. I have to admit we are a little tired so we will let you know as soon as possible when we are up for visitors.
Take care, Annie

August 8: Hello to everyone. This is Annie.
Yes, it is
true! Mike is finally home after 9 months and 6 days (but who's counting).
We couldn't be more delighted. It has been a little rough because Mike came
home from the Rehab center with a not-so-nice "parting gift"; a
gastro-intestinal bug so he hasn't been feeling well. Luckily, it was
quickly diagnosed by Mike's new (local)
oncologist,
Dr. Harden. He should be better in a week or two. The bad news is that he
doesn't feel up to visitors yet because of the virus and his many visits to
the doctors, physical therapy, dentist etc. Don't worry there will be lots
of time to visit with Mike. Tammy Waldroup has once again kindly offer to
organize the visiting schedule. Many of you are already on the list but feel
free to update your contact information including:
Name
Email
Best contact phone number(s)
You can
email it to Tammy Waldroup at twaldroup@cra-usa.net
or call her at 757-725-1878.
She will let you know as soon as possible when Mike is ready for visitors.
I also wanted to let you all know that despite having a very bothersome virus, Mike's blood work is looking very very good. His platelets are normal and his hemoglobin is above 11 which I like to refer him as superman because his hemoglobin hardly ever rose above 8 in Richmond. It has not been that high in 9 months. He also is walking short distances and can do a few stairs. I fully expect him to continue to make small improvements every day in part due to the all of your wonderful support. We will never be able to thank you enough. Take care and we will be in touch soon.
Annie
PS. Mike got so many birthday cards the mailroom finally asked, "Who is this guy and why does he know so many people?” Thanks you for making this such a great birthday.

Years ago, I would frequent Studio 2:38 Hair Graphics up
on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. I will get myself a
new do and had the opportunity to watch the models for hair shows come in
and get all ready for local shows. The studio always had
models and was also included in many major hair books. Well, this week this
salon in addition to some other locals won the $20,000.00 grand prize from
the World Famous Bronner Bros. International Hair Show, Aug 7 -10 in
Atlanta. If you are the slightest bit interested, the next show will be on
Nov 21 at the Hampton Roads convention Center in Hampton. This will be the
Evolution Hair and Fashion Show. I am thinking here if
or maybe they will have the model sporting a hair design that includes a
workable mini TV in the models hair?

Words from the Secretary:
Many of the community organizations all over the country have leaders and membership populated by many from the 'baby boom' generation. These organizations are actively seeking younger membership through all types of membership drives to continue on the many wonderful initiatives that these organizations have provided over the years. If you are generation x and the next, take time out of your busy schedules and come out to the meetings of many of these organizations. It will be YOU that will lead on into the future. The Northampton Civic League is a good start as well as the Northampton Lions Club. Maybe one of the meetings of all of these organizations should be dedicated to each member bringing a younger member and having round table discussions to find out from these younger members how to attract and retain them.
Do you realize that the number of young veterans are growing tremendously? As long as you have the wars and fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan that number will continue to climb. When you visit many of your American Legions, you do not see this new generation represented. Now is the time for you to come on out and become active members. You need each other to help with the toil that wars can bring and to help with bringing about recovery, change and all the fine things that these organizations have accomplished. Maybe there are new initiatives that need to start up as well. Older Veterans seeking you to find and bring younger members in. We need stronger American Legions so that we can go out and pull and reform and take care of all our former service members that are living in poverty or homeless. It takes strong organizations with commitment from it's members to make that happen.
Make our America stronger and it takes all of us working to make it happen. Come out of the box and be creative and advertise, word of mouth, and even offer to bring a younger member to meetings and get them involved.
Flora J. Randall
