Email from Wife Karen, “While Alonzo and I were in Atlantic city, we were notified that his Aunt Louise had passed. She had been ill for a short period of time and had been in a nursing home for less than 2 weeks. She had a seizure at the nursing home and later died at the hospital. Louise had always lived with Alonzo's family, so she was like a second mother to him. Alonzo and his brother are completing funeral arrangements in DC.”

Words from the Secretary: Folks I attended the biweekly 400th Anniversary Grant meeting this week on Tuesday night, and I watched as the planning and organization of this entire project took shape. We actually have an agenda or listing of all of the categories that this project will cover as well as a listing of candidates to interview. I experienced performing a mock live interview and being videotaped simultaneously. One thing I will share about being the interviewer and the person that is being interview is to remember to look at the camera while talking. In the end, you will be facing the audiences that will forever watch the videos. But, really it was pretty exciting. The interviews are about to occur, as well as scanning and coping pictures to make the album come alive.
I just step forth and do what I can to help. If any of you members have not been to a meeting, come on out and see what it is all about and what you can do. Every effort is appreciated. I do believe that the neighborhood that you live in will probably be covered so come on and share in the joy and the experience of making this happen. This project in the making will become a fixed part of the history of Hampton and you should want to be included.
My hat is off to several of the members that are working very hard to make this a successful project. We appreciate you!!!

Project Single Moms, Worldwide, Inc.
Hampton.
Come out and hear how PSM will benefit the single moms and single teen moms
in Hampton. See how PSM will empower, educate, engage, energize, equip and
enhance the lives of the single moms and their children. There are so many
areas of need for single mothers living in America. Focus groups conducted
in 2008 with over 200 single mothers identified several issues which many
feel have impacted their lives. The unique issues that many single mothers
face are compounded by a lack of support, gaps in services, or non-existent
programs to address their concerns. Project Single Moms, Worldwide, Inc.
strives to advocate on behalf of single mothers by accessing funding
earmarked specifically for programs that offer single mothers a hand up
towards self-sufficiency as opposed to a hand out which only offers
temporary solutions to the long-term problems and challenges faced by many
single mothers in America. This project is for ALL single moms, teen moms,
elderly moms, etc., regardless of their color, their religion, or their
financial background. We welcome them all! Single dads are welcome to join

I had the experience this week of celebrating my birthday on Thursday and that truly was a remarkable day. I actually pretty much enjoy and celebrate the entire month, because July is ideal for that. I even tried calling Keith Sweat on his talk show to wish him a Happy Birthday as well, but never could get thru. I am still a kid at heart.
My son elected to spend most of the day with me and it was an adventurous day. We were riding in the pickup down the streets and listening to some of his music. He was actually singing along with most songs and finally one caught my attention and I was singing too. I actually like that song, Airplane featuring Bobby Ray and Haley Williams. The lyrics are still with me, “Could we pretend that airplanes, in the night skies are like shooting stars. I could really use a wish right now, a wish right now, a wish right now. Yeah, I could use a dream or a genie or a wish to go back to a place much simpler than this…” I think that the bales of hay in the back of the pickup were jamming to the beat as we rode away from Clark’s Feed. We even sat and talk as we waited for my number to be called in the DMV. We ate sea food and talk about our likes and dislikes. We made many stops but most of all, I think that without either of us knowing at the time; we made memories for tomorrow when one day he will remember his mom’s birthday and the fun we had.
Folks enjoy the summer; get to finding people and photos for the NHCL Album. Get with Selvin and set up the interview times and use the schedule he provided, interview aids. The schedule is listed here in the NHCL Section. Be very caution of the heat and look out for others as well, and watch out for that song, Airplane.

The last update was from Mike and Liam. It was very funny. They are a great writing team. I am not so talented but I am good with updates. Here's a quick review for everyone:
Mike did great in acute rehab but started to show some signs of an infection toward the end.
He was transferred to the acute rehab hospital where they discovered that a catheter used to draw blood and deliver medicines called a PICC line was infected. This can happen to any line placed in the body. His PICC was 5 months old. They put him on an antibiotic. The good news is that infection is already cleared up (blood tests are normal).
While he was fighting that infection, his breathing got more labored and his blood pressure dropped. He also had fluid building up in the lungs. The doctors decided to put him in the ICU. That was a very good decision because Mike has had one-to-one nursing and excellent doctors in the ICU. His blood pressure returned to normal within hours. They did put him back on the ventilator to "give him rest". It sounds scary but Mike has done that on almost every visit to the ICU. Now he is being weaned off the vent which takes time. The most frustrating part is that Mike can not talk while he is the vent. You all know how much he likes to talk. But as soon as he get off the vent he usually charms the ICU staff. They already love him. Yesterday we got good news that his X-Ray had improved. The other thing that may surprise folks is that the doctors gave him an NG tube so that they could supplement his nutrition. Again, that is common practice especially because you can not eat when you are resting on the vent. It is temporary but may be a little scary to see if you have never seen someone with an NG tube. Mike has been doing well eating even with a tube down his throat and despite the over-cooked hospital food. Yes, he is eating ice cream shakes at almost every meal. The NG tube will be removed as soon as Mike can eat enough calories.
I met with his oncologist today who said Mike is still in remission. He predicts that Mike's blood counts will continue to improve as he gets over this infection. He is happy with Mike's progress in rehab. I was able to report that Mike got out of bed with minimal help from the physical therpist. I think Mike will continue to make slow and steady progress.
I want to thank everyone for all of your wonderful help and support.
Mike will be 51 on July 30th. I see no reason why we can't start the celebration early and I think it would lift his spirits to spread out the joy over the next few weeks. So if you are interested you can send your card to:

Other News:
Sometimes an incident will trigger you and remind you just how short life is. This past Tues night one of our engineers in my division died. He worked a few floors above me in the same building outside the yard and we went in passing pretty much all the time. He was just 45 years old, married with three children. It would be 12 hours later that he was found dead within another building inside the yard. It was a sad day as I placed flowers at his work station and saw the still shocked look on the face of other engineers that sit around him and were his close comrades. It was sad to see the look on his manager’s face as he spoke heartily of him. Later on the phone expressing sentiments of condolences to his wife it was heartbreaking as she thanked over and over through shuttered tears for all the kindness and love that people have shown. His passing has taught me that you have to listen a bit closer to folks, and be just a bit more human, because you spend a lot of time with your coworkers and they do mean more to you than you realize.

Hello to all from Annie!
This week Liam is starting his administrative
duties helping mike so mike is dictating and this does not work well because
Liam is a left wing nut job not a right wing one and thus hates fascists. To
make the job easier mike is paying Liam and allowing him to sneak some
things in here. So you can have fun figuring out which is from Liam or Mike
it shouldn’t be that hard because Liam’s will be better haha. Mike has
finished rehab and we are very happy with his progress there but he has
infections so the doctors are going to continue to hold mike hostage, I mean
work their hardest to get him home by switching out his PIC line. Mike is
currently and unfortunately back on lovely sounding oxygen and his activity
level is down a little bit. Recently Liam returned from summer camp at JMU
for debate. Liam and mike are both thinking back on their first camp
experiences.
• Liam went to a coed camp
• Mike was takin’ a trip with the boys
• Liam got to wash his own dishes… and the rest of the camps too
• Mike didn’t even get real dishes
• Liam got free ultra wedgies on the zip line
• Mike used his “bear” hands and animal instinct to hunt down frogs
• Liam had the rare joy of cafeteria food served family style
• Mikes camp had every one wearing a uniform
• Liam’s camp had a uniform organ failure
• Mike was in the mountains in a tent or on the cold hard ground
• Liam was in the woods in a nice warm compound
• Mike could never reach the archery section of the camp because of crowds
• Liam was a cool kid who got to do archery… because of a rotation of groups
• Mike flipped his canoe (for training he said)
• Liam just had a hard time with the whole going straight in a canoe thing
• Mike learned to whittle he made a dog that was supposed to be a horse or
lama (art class training)
• They didn’t trust Liam with knives good call
• Mike had outdoor plumbing
• Liam had indoor “dorm clean” plumbing, outdoors might have been better
better
• Every day ended with fire for Mike and very old fashion camp songs “pink
pajamas in the summer when its not”
• Every day ended with nurses for Liam and usually juice boxes
A huge thanks to Annie for all her help in
rehab you are the best part of my life. I really hopes to be back to
Love Mike (and Liam)

Hello to all from Annie!
Going to Maryview, acute rehab center has been a great experience for both Mike and me. The staff get an A+ for effort and friendliness. Mike is doing very well. He has showered (the 2nd time in 7.5 months), gone up and down 3 steps with help and is walking more and more each day. It is so refreshing that the staff is willing to work with us to learn more about Mike's chemo. For example, they were worried when his hemoglobin dropped to 8.0 (normal for healthy adults is between 13-15).We are used to very low numbers. They were surprised that Mike and I were happy about 8.0 because that is on the high side for Mike and does not need a blood transfusion. The doctor has been good about communicating with Mike's oncologist and open to our suggestions. Mike may be coming home in about 6 to 10 days depending on his progress.
That leads up to my next request....
Since Mike is coming home, we may need to make some minor adaptations to the
house like installing a raised toilet seat with railing, put a railing on a
bed, etc. Unfortunately we do not know specifically what our needs are at
this time because this is his first week. I am looking for a "handy person"
that may be available towards the end of next week (preferably after 5pm) to
install equipment. If you can recommend anyone, please send a private blog
to me.
Thanks to everyone for your kind words/support about my brother Mark. It has been a difficult time for our family but once again my large wonderful family has come together to support my sister-in-law Judy, Ryan (nephew), Kim (niece) and her husband, Guy. As well as, my mother (understandably) is very saddened by the loss of my brother and father in such a short time span.

We must never forget who gets the credit for the freedoms we have,
of which we should be eternally grateful.

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform;
so young, so tall, so proud.
With hair cut square and eyes alert,
he'd stand out in any crowd.
