We had confirmation from his primary oncologist today. We couldn't be more thrilled. Mike also started the maintenance phase of his chemotherapy which has less side effects than the last 2 phases. It lasts for 2-3 years and is mostly oral chemo drugs but we will still visit VCU outpatient at least once a month. Many people ask why chemo if you are in remission? My friend, Kathy, gave a great analogy...it's like when doctors tell you to finish the 10 day antibiotic even if you feel better on day 7. You are more likely to not lapse out of remission if you finish the entire chemotherapy protocol. We are going to stay on schedule and after 5 years of remission, they think your chances are very good to stay in remission for a very very long time. Thanks so much for everyone prayers and positive thoughts. Mike and I truly believe that each and everyone of you has played a role in getting him to remission we couldn't have done it without you.
Next step...acute rehab. VCU is not sending out "positive vibes" so we have started to explore other options. We know acute rehab is where Mike belongs next. We hope the insurance company agrees. It's a lot of work right know. Mike is doing better with the pneumonia so cross your fingers and hopefully he'll be in rehab by next week.

Hi to all from Annie!
It's been a challenging few weeks. The good news is Mike finished phase 2 of
his chemotherapy. He has had some problems with his breathing and blood
pressure which has been somewhat of a mystery. He may have had an infection
or bad reaction to medication(s). The last 2 attending doctors have both
said that they think Mike is in remission based on his good blood work. His
oncologist wanted a repeat bone marrow biopsy to confirm this. It was rough
today. I was tired after that procedure and all I had to do was hold his
hand. You can imagine how Mike felt when it took a total of 5 tries to get
good sample. Luckily they finally did. So Mike requests that everyone think
the word "clear" which means he is in remission. It may take a few days to
find the preliminary results and a few weeks to find out the final
cytogenetic which is the final confirmation of remission. We will let you
know. Mike is still motivated to go to acute rehab ASAP. There may be a
light at the end of the tunnel soon. Take care, Annie
There is one more genetics test and then I
will move to the next phase. The test is known as a fish test and the test
results may tweak my next phase of treatment. Since this test is more
sensitive it will confirm I am in remission but, thus far, everything looks
good.
Thanks for all the positive, clear loving thoughts. They carry me forward!
MC
Hi from Mike and Annie!
We are patiently waiting for the Fish test. We may not find out until next
week. We are very happy about the preliminary results. Unfortunately, Mike
has now picked up another bug and has pneumonia. They started 3 differ net
antibiotics as soon as the symptoms began so we are hopeful it was caught
early. We are a little frustrated because we feel like Mike has been running
a marathon and someone keeps moving the finish line. The good news is Mike
is a trooper. Even though he is very tired, he does physical therapy with
Annie everyday. We remain focused on getting to Acute rehab ASAP and we
refuse to let a few germs slow us down at this time. We would also like to
take this time to thank everyone for the kind words and thoughts on the
blog. We feel very touched and inspired. Take care, Annie

The biopsy report is taking longer than we expected. We opted to wait to meet with Mike's primary oncologist on Sunday to get the official report (together). We do have some great news. The pulmonary specialist said that Mike can have his trach removed. That was music to our ears. We have wanted that for so many months. The only other thing to remove is Mike's peg which provides him with nutrtition via tube feeding at night. I am working hard on trying to fatten him up. I offered to make a direct donation but the doctor's did not take me up on that suggestion. I guess Mike will just have to eat more. We are trying every protein bar/sweet/ice cream etc. My sister Gina suggested Greek yogurt which higher in protein and calories than other yogurts and it is definitley a hit. Unfortunately, it is so good (I tried it too). We will never be able to tolerate regular yogurt again. Mike also climbed 3 steps (total) yesterday. It was a challenge and he did have to rest often but he did it. So we both feel that things are turning around. We will update you all ASAP about the bone marrow biopsy report. Thanks for all the "clear" thoughts. Take care, Annie
