·         The league’s third forum of the year is coming up at the April Meeting.  Hampton’s Codes Compliance. Ask yourself what do you know about them?

 

·         Month of March Birthdays: Celebrate the whole month.  Happy Birthday on March 26 – Matt Asay.

 

 

·         President Asay and Vice President Duncan will be steering ideas that the league can do to quality for participating in the City of Hampton Neighborhood Grant Programs.  Seeking ideas as well as help from everyone. Need to become proactive because deadlines are coming up soon to qualify for grants or until funding is no longer available.

·         Get your registration in early:  The Hampton Master Gardeners and the Hampton Clean City Commission are partners in bringing the much-acclaimed rain barrel workshops to Hampton. contact Cris Ausink at causink@hampton.gov or call 727-1158.
March 20 & 27: 9:00 - 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m.  Blue Bird Gap Farm. Rain or shine. 
Please bring $40 in cash or a check made out to Hampton Master Gardeners, a lock or crescent wrench, a flashlight and work gloves. Make sure you have a vehicle with the capacity to carry the barrel home.

 

 

·         May 15, July 17, Sept 18 and Nov 20: 8 a.m. – 12 noon. Bring house hold chemical discards to the Hampton Public Works Operations Complex – 419 N. Armstead Ave. Household Chemical Collections.  Environmental safe disposals for residents. Proof of residency may be required. No businesses. ·         400th Anniversary Celebration: The Hampton History Museum is hosting two special exhibits to honor the 400th Anniversary of Hampton. 

o   March 1 throughAugust15, 2010 and September 15, 2010 and run through March 17, 2011.

 

 

·         Know anything about the 4-H Club? Bluebird Gap Farm is starting a 4-H Club for ages 5 – 18. Initial Interest Meeting SAT – March 20 -  11 a.m. – 12 noon at the Amphitheater. Parents, volunteers and youth.

 

·         Hampton Animal Control operates under the Hampton Police Division actively enforcing state and local laws regarding the humane treatment of animals. Information  757-727-6111.

Bob O’Neill, executive director of the ICMA (International City/County Management Association), is a former Hampton city manager; and Bill Schneider, former CNN senior political analyst, is from Portsmouth.

The City of Hampton is interested in collaborating with you to collect your thoughts on this potential capability and to see what level of support we might garner in proceeding with our process of providing a Request for Information to Google.   • 400th Anniversary Celebration: The Hampton History Museum is hosting two special exhibits to honor the 400th Anniversary of Hampton. 
    • The first of these will be on display from March 1 through August 15.
      "South King:  Hampton's Waterfront through the Ages," features the waterfront of
      Hampton along South King Street as it has changed over the past 400 years.  Many
      drawings and photographs portray the different moods and looks of this area, while
      artifacts from archaeological excavations and from the still-existing ship chandlery
      and seafood businesses there will provide multiple foci of information and stories
      about the oldest continuous English settlement in North America.

       
    • A second special exhibit, honoring Hampton's premiere photographers, C. Ethelbert and W. E. "Happy" Cheyne, will open on September 15, 2010 and run through March17, 2011.

  • Save the Cows at Blue Bird Gap Farm.  Remember that you can help by not losing the farm to budget cuts.  Do you know what you care about in the city of Hampton and want to see that same concern in candidates running for office?   What are those concerns?

 

  • Bethel Temple Church has established a community Service Award to recognize and honor outstanding individuals and organizations that have made valuable contributions to changing lives in the Hampton Roads community.  An award will be a $5,000 grant. Applications can be picked up at the church at 1705 Todd's Lane or www.betheltempel.com. Contact Linda Richardson at 826-1426 (ext. 316).

  •  Oh, the luck of the Irish!!  St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17.  St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.  This is his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. However, did you know that the first St. Patrick's Day Parade was not in Ireland?  Where? In New York City on March 17, 1762.  Would you like to see a good St. Patrick’s Day Parade tomorrow, March 13? Visit over in Norfolk, Northside Middle School – 9720 Granby St. is the start of the parade at 10 a.m. For more information call 587-3548.  Also try some corn beef and cabbage or Irish soda bread to bring the festivities to your house.

The NHCL City Council Candidates Forum was a success. NHCL thanks all of the City Council candidates: Mr. Paige V. Washington, Mr. Willie J. Moffett, Mr. Donnie Tuck, Mr. Chris Stuart and Mr. Larry S. Gwaltney that participated in the March 2 Forum.  Thanks also for all of the help, media exposure as well as all in the community who came out to participate. Remember the upcoming election for these candidates will be on the 4th of May.

    All workshops will be held at Blue Bird Gap Farm - 60 Pine Chapel Rd., Hampton in
    the feeding shed behind the tower with the Blue Bird on it.

    The workshops are rain or shine. Please bring $40 in cash or a check made out to
    Hampton Master Gardeners, a lock or crescent wrench, a flashlight, and work gloves.
    We provide the pre-drilled barrel, and all the hardware. The barrel is a 50-55
    gallon plastic olive or pickle barrel, so please make sure you have a vehicle with
    sufficient cargo capacity to carry it home after the workshop.
